The Iconic Plant for Butterfly Gardens

Why Milkweed Plants?

No wildlife-friendly garden is complete without the addition of the Milkweed Plant. From its colorful growth and rich green foliage to its easy upkeep, the Milkweed is an essential component of a showy landscape.

And it tolerates a number of conditions. Swampy, soggy areas are no match for the Milkweed, which thrives in bog-like ground and continues blooming, with eye-catching flowers clustered on tall stems that last through the summer. Plus, its visually interesting seed pods often persist into the winter season, too.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Start by finding an area with full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day) and well-drained soil for your Milkweed Plant.

When you’ve selected a location, dig a hole that’s about twice the size of your plant’s root ball and just as deep. Place the Milkweed Plant, tamp down the soil and water the surrounding soil to settle the roots. We recommend applying mulch after planting to conserve moisture.

2. Watering: Check your soil about 2 to 3 inches down for dryness to determine when to water your plant. If the soil around your Milkweed Plant is dry, water the plant. However, watering your plant about once or twice weekly is a good rule of thumb.

3. Pruning: For a tidier appearance, remove old and faded foliage and blooms during the dormant season in winter, before new growth emerges. You can also divide the Milkweed Plant clumps every 2 to 3 years during early spring.
