A Joyfully Sunny and Low-Maintenance Shrub

The Sundance Esperanza may be the burst of cheer you’re looking for. The sunny yellow and trumpet-shaped blooms coat this fast-growing shrub, providing plenty of color for your landscape or garden. Along with the flowers, the fern-like leaves grow upright in an olive-green color.

With the Sundance Tecoma, also called Esperanza, you’ll have color most of the growing season, blooming from spring until the first frost. Come fall, the plant produces seed pods and pale brown to dark gray bark.

Butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy the slightly fragrant flowers, so this plant will fit right into wildlife gardens. The bush works well in containers for patio gardens, mass plantings, hedges, rock gardens, and Mediterranean-inspired landscapes.

Native to the Sonoran Desert, the plant is very drought-tolerant and hardy to most soils. Compared to other Tecoma cultivars, the Sundance Esperance is the most-cold hardy and drought resistant. While it grows best in warm, tropical climates, it can also be grown as an annual in cooler areas.

Considered very easy to grow, it’s one of the best plants for desert landscapes and requires very minimal maintenance. Order a Sundance Esperanza today, plant this season, and enjoy its blooms for years to come!

Planting & Care

Planting: Before planting your Tecoma shrub, ensure the site selected has enough room for the plant once it reaches maturity, as it’s a fast grower. Choose a location with full sun as the plant is a desert native. At least six hours of sun is preferable, though the plant is shade tolerant. Without enough sun, the shrub produces fewer blooms.

Water: Grow your Tecoma in moderately moist, well-draining soil. The plant doesn’t like wet feet and too-moist soil can lead to root rot. To add better drainage to your soil, mix in some compost or other organic matter to your soil before planting. Water weekly, or more often in times of extreme drought.

Maintenance: Once Tecoma plants are established, they require very little maintenance. To get a bushier plant and more blooms, pinch off spent flowers and seed pods. If the plant gets damaged, it responds well to being cut back in the winter. No fertilizer is required for growing your Tecoma.
