Sweet, Wild Blueberries, Grown at Home!

Why Lowbush Blueberries?

You're probably familiar with the berries you get from this blueberry bush's larger cousin, the Highbush Blueberry. But if you haven't tried the Lowbush Blueberry, you're missing out!

These smaller berries are sweet, with a more intense blueberry flavor. They'll make the perfect addition to pancakes, smoothies, pies and more - and they're excellent for snacking fresh off the bush, too!

Often found in the wild in northern climates like Maine and New Brunswick, the Lowbush Blueberry is perfect for at-home growing in zones 3-7! They're extremely cold-hardy and prefer acidic, well-drained soil.

  • Produces deliciously sweet blueberries
  • Low-lying and compact, ideal as a space-filler or groundcover in garden beds
  • Prefers acidic, well-draining soil
  • Hardy and disease resistant

Planting & Care

Location: When selecting a site to plant your Lowbush Blueberry, make sure the site has full sun and drains well. Blueberry plants require acidic, well-draining soil. When planted in soils with a pH higher than 5.5, blueberry plants do not absorb nutrients adequately and become more susceptible to disease. Blueberry plants can contract moisture-related diseases when exposed to humid conditions or standing water.

Planting instructions: Dig a hole about twice the size of the root ball of your Lowbush Blueberry, and as deep as the container it comes in. Amend the soil with peat moss or sawdust. Place the Blueberry bush in the hole. Cover the roots with soil-peat moss mix.

Watering: Your Lowbush Blueberries will need to be watered regularly during the growing season. The soil surrounding your plant should be moist but never saturated. Light green leaves can be a sign of overwatering, while drooping leaves can be a sign of over- or under-watering.

Fertilization: Fertilize the Blueberry bush twice a year, once in the spring and once after harvest, using a fertilizer for acid-loving plants.

Pruning: Prune your Lowbush Blueberry every other year to promote greater berry production, and remove any less productive or damaged branches.
